Post-Operative Evaluation

Your recovery is just as important as your procedure. Please follow these guidelines carefully to ensure a safe and comfortable recovery after your anesthesia.

What to Expect After Anesthesia

Drowsiness

It is normal to feel groggy or sleepy for several hours after anesthesia. Rest as much as needed.

Nausea

Mild nausea is common. Anti-nausea medications are administered during your procedure to minimize this, but symptoms may linger.

Sore Throat

If a breathing device was used during your procedure, you may experience mild throat soreness that typically resolves within a day or two.

Muscle Aches

Some patients experience mild muscle soreness following anesthesia, which is normal and usually resolves within 24-48 hours.

Recovery Instructions

Rest at home for the remainder of the day — do not engage in strenuous activity

Have a responsible adult with you for 24 hours after discharge, or until 7am the following day

Do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or make important legal or financial decisions for 24 hours

Begin with small sips of clear liquids and light foods as tolerated — nausea is common after anesthesia

Take pain medications or anti-nausea medications as prescribed by your provider

Keep all follow-up appointments with your dental or medical provider

Warning Signs — Seek Immediate Care
